The Fellowship strengthened mentorship, expanded practical learning opportunities, and reinforced its role as a pipeline for African youth participation in climate governance. The Cohort seamlessly integrated theoretical knowledge with practical experience in negotiation and advocacy. Central to this success was the Comprehensive Knowledge Acquisition component, through which participants developed a deep understanding of core areas, including climate science, national and regional vulnerabilities, UNFCCC governance structures, Paris Agreement mechanisms, and climate finance instruments.
Furthermore, participants significantly advanced their Practical Negotiation Skills by engaging in simulations of plenary sessions and informal consultations, gaining hands-on experience in drafting and interpreting negotiation texts, building effective coalitions, and negotiating consensus among diverse blocs. This practical expertise was supplemented by a marked increase in Technical Competency, achieved via exposure to critical areas such as methane management, carbon markets, and climate entrepreneurship, broadening their understanding of applied climate solutions. Fellows enhanced their Climate Justice Awareness by exploring the principles of equity, Common But Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR), and inclusive policy design, thereby strengthening their ability to advocate for marginalized communities and vulnerable nations in climate negotiations.
The program successfully fostered Youth Leadership and Engagement, equipping participants with practical strategies to leverage youth participation, Indigenous knowledge, and broader stakeholder input to shape climate policies.
